THROUGH THE HOLE
This series features photos taken through the peephole of my front door. It was based on the idea of social anxiety and started with the anxiety I feel when answering the front door of my house. I realised though as I worked on the series, that this feeling applies more broadly to social anxiety overall. The photos portray the anxiety I feel towards meeting and conversing with new people. It's like looking through the peephole of a door, both hopeful and scared of who may be on the other side. To get across this feeling of unease in the images, I used a lot of black to isolate the view through the peephole and I incorporated the presence of a figure in some of the scenes. Sometimes there's a person at the door and sometimes there isn't. Not knowing if someone will be in the view adds to the feeling of unease I wanted to create in the viewer.
